Setelah Olympus, Panasonic, dan Samsung berhasil memasukkan image sensor  DSLR ke dalam compact camera, sekarang Sony tidak mau ketinggalan dengan mengeluarkan produk compact camera dengan teknologi mirrorless dan lensa yang dapat ditukar. Dengan menggunakan teknologi mirrorless maka kamera dapat menghasilkan gambar kualitas tinggi tanpa harus memiliki body yang besar dan berat.

Sony seri NEX ini adalah kamera mirrorless pertama yang di design khusus untuk mengatasi permasalahan continuous autofocus dan exposure adjustment pada saat merekam video. Hal ini sangat jarang ditemui di digital camera biasa. Hasil video Sony NEX 5 sangat baik karena kamera ini mendukung format 1080i AVCHD.  Kamera 14 Megapixel dengan sensor APS HD CMOS ini menghasilkan gambar yang sangat tajam dan noice yang cukup rendah, dengan Processor Bionz terbaru membuat kinerja kamera ini sangat cepat dan tidak berisik. Sony NEX 5 memiliki LCD 3 Inci dengan resolusi 920.000 pixel yang dapat berputar 80 derajat keatas dan 45 derajat kebawah untuk memudahkan anda melihat. Kamera ini beratnya  288 gr tanpa lensa, sangat ringan jika dibandingkan dengan Canon 550D yang seberat 550 gr. 

Kamera ini bukan tanpa kekurangan, tampilan menu dan kontrol yang agak rumit, autofocus yang tidak konsisten, tidak memiliki viewfinder, dan kurang kontrol manual. Namun Sony NEX 5 masih lebih baik jika dibandingkan dengan para pesaingnya seperti Panasonic GF1, Olympus E-PL1 dan Samsung NX10, sehingga kamera ini layak sebagai pilihan utama anda yang ingin mendapatkan kamera dengan kualitas gambar setara DSLR namun memiliki body yang sangat compact.
